The caption does more than you think

A good video with a weak caption leaves reach on the table. A strong caption increases the chance of comments, and comments boost your reach through the algorithm.

The structure of a good caption

Rule 1: The opening line is your second hook. Instagram only shows the first two lines before you have to tap 'more'. That first sentence must be just as strong as your video hook.

Weak: 'In this video you learn how to make Reels.' Strong: 'Most Reels fail in the first two seconds. Here's why.'

Rule 2: Deliver value or a story. The body of your caption is space for context, extra tips, or a personal story. Use short paragraphs. White space makes the text readable on mobile.

Rule 3: End with a question. The strongest close is a question that's easy to answer: 'What's your biggest challenge with video?' or 'Reels or carousels, what works better for you?'

Caption formulas that work

Formula 1, The learning paragraph: Opening statement + explanation in 3 to 5 points + question.

Formula 2, The mini-story: Context (what happened) + what I learned + what you can do with it.

Formula 3, The controversy: Statement that creates friction + supporting argument + question whether they agree.

How long should a caption be?

Long enough to be valuable, short enough to be read. For Reels: 3 to 8 lines works best. For carousels: longer is fine, people are already in reading mode.
